I overexposed this photo of an abandoned house and trailer to give it a sort of 80s feel. This scene is across the street from the Original Mine.

Original Mine Pipes
I got a new lens today. It has a set focal length, meaning you can't zoom. You zoom with your foot, by moving forward and backward. I've never owned a lens that wasn't a zoom lens, so this was a bit different. I was determined to only shoot with that one lens, and was happy with the results. I shot this photo through the fence.
This photo is of some pipes in the yard of the Original Mine. If anybody knows the technical name of what that is and what they used to do, I'd love to know. There are downloadable desktop images at at the end of this post.

Pekin Building and Cloud Movement
I was standing in the parking lot on the corner of Main and Galena, across the street from the Irish Times. The building is the Pekin, and I used a 30-second exposure to capture the movement of the clouds above. I had to use a pretty high ISO, so the photo is a bit noisy.

Bell Diamond Mine Machinery and Star Trails
I have a portable power pack for my studio lights, and decided to finally test it out tonight. It lit up the machinery next to the Bell Diamond Mine all right, but not as much as I'd hoped. I set it off at full power four times during the 30-second exposure, and probably should have set it off more. I also have a strobe that is twice as strong, but I didn't bring it. Maybe next time I'll bring more than one studio strobe and some other ideas...
Anyway, this is a pretty common point of view, you'll see it a lot in other people's photos as well as in my own...too bad for the fence, and trespassing laws! Anyway, the 30-second exposure added some star trails above the head frame, that's what those funny looking lines are. There are also two desktop images at the bottom.
Desktop Image Instructions: To set an image as your desktop, click one of the high res images at the bottom of this post (they look like thumbnails). Then right click the image, and click "set as background." It's as easy as that!

St. John's Episcopal Church
I was taking photos in an alley near St. John's Episcopal Church when a man named James asked if I wanted to take photos in the church. So I followed him in and took many photos, including this one of the chairs in one of the sanctuary's. The light is coming from a door.
The church is beautiful and has many stained-glass windows, a pipe organ, and other things of interest. They offer free tours of the church as well. I have more information on the history and will post it a bit later.

Finlen Rainbow
I apologize for having a rainbow for the second day in a row...but I can't help what happens with the weather! I took this photo from Main Street, near the Federal Building. The rainbow was a double rainbow that went from the Finlen to the church north of the Federal Building. I didn't have a wide enough angle lens to capture the entire thing, so I took photos in sets with the idea of putting them together in Photoshop...but it didn't really work out because I couldn't line the rainbow up perfectly. So the rainbow looked dome/oval instead of round.

Downloadable Desktop Image
I'm going to start posting downloadable desktop images, so people can have a decent size image for their computer desktops rather than using the tiny file sizes I've been posting. I'll probably post one every couple of weeks, starting this week.
To download the images, click on one of the following thumbnails, whichever resolution your screen is. To find out what resolution your screen is, Click Start->Control Panel->Display->Settings and there will be a bar on the bottom left showing what your resolution is.
After you find out your resolution and have clicked on the thumbnail that coincides with your screen size, right click the image and save the photo to your desktop. From there you can add the image to your desktop as usual.
If you don't know how, e-mail me and I'll give you instructions. I will also add a link on the right toolbar to all the desktops as I post them.

Sunset over the Big M
First of all, I have a SLIDESHOW up of all of the images from buttedailyphoto, so if people want to see all of the photos they don't need to keep clicking "Older Posts."
I drove around for quite a while trying to find some inspiration for a photo. I finally decided I would take some long exposures of traffic. I drove near the Kaw Avenue overpass and parked, then trucked onto the bridge...I didn't see anything too interesting, then walked the rest of the way over for some reflections in this pond.
You can see the Big M on the right, and the traffic lights on I-90 with this three-second exposure. The black dots in the water are ducks.

Here's another photo of this same pond, but quite a bit closer. This is a 10-second exposure, which makes the wind-blown water look soft rather than choppy.

The sun was partially shining on this building, which is on the corner of Park and Montana Streets. It used to be the Bee Hive a long time ago, and I'm sure it was a million other things at some point. I had trouble finding a position where there weren't power lines crossing in front of the building. I walked across all four cross walks on that corner until realizing I could just squat down and miss the power lines. I added a sepia tone to this photo, and desaturated much of the color.

Top of the Finlen
This is a photo of the top of the Finlen Hotel. There's a lot of moulding and detail that you don't really notice from far away, but a telephoto lens captures it.

Uptown Flowers
I was uptown this morning around 7:30, an noticed water streaming out of some of the hanging flower plants. The water was gushing out, but I had to walk about a half of a block to get close enough to the plant to take a photo, so I missed most of it. There's a man that drives around in a truck with a hose thing and waters all of the plants.

Fire near Clark's Park
After work I saw a big cloud of black smoke and followed it to this house, near Clark's Park. I took a few photos with my little point-and-shoot camera...wish I had my SLR, but my little camera does alright. I talked with a few people who had been there right after it started. I guess there were a few people in the basement working out, and some people that saw the fire had to go in and tell them to get out of the house. One lady said said it seemed to start on the back patio, near a BBQ.
I hope everything works out OK for the people who own the house, but it didn't look like the house was going to be saved.
The smoke was so thick at times that tears were running down my face. After coming home, I had black splotches on my arms, clothes, face and car from the ash. I showered, but my room still smells like campfire from the clothes I was wearing.

Detail on the Finlen
Yep, that's the Finlen Hotel again, for the second day in a row. I was driving around trying to find something to photograph. The detail on the roof jumped out at me. Today and yesterday my camera has forced me to use my telephoto lens. My normal lens is broken! It's a zoom 18mm-70mm lens, but the zoom is broken and stuck at 70mm. So I might as well use my 80-200mm lens. Anyway, I've been forced to get more closeup shots, which is probably a good thing since I usually take medium-length shots. A little variety never hurt anyone. Now I just need to get my other lens fixed!
